Sterling’s Impact on the Epilepsy Therapy Project
When Warren Lammert learned that his daughter had epilepsy, he decided to launch the Epilepsy Therapy Project to accelerate the development of new treatments for the disease. Initially, locating the right partner for this project proved difficult. After all, Lammert wasn’t content with simply contributing funds to epilepsy research; he wanted to have a direct impact on the outcome of the project.
Understanding that he needed the experience and expertise of an organization to help execute what would be a very complicated project, Lammert decided to partner with Sterling. Sterling recruited an executive director for the initiative, assembled an advisory board to coach scientists on the business end of drug development, and ultimately, helped speed a number of new epilepsy medications to market. Many people who are afflicted with epilepsy are now benefitting directly from medications that can be traced to the efforts of the Epilepsy Therapy Project.
In addition, Sterling managed all the administrative tasks associated with creating and running the project, including the tax implications, legal implications, and filings. This enabled Lammert and his colleagues to focus their efforts and attention on what truly mattered—making a difference. Watch the video above to learn more.
Sterling Drives Results at the Fauquier Free Clinic
The mission of the Fauquier Free Clinic is to provide medical help to families and individuals who cannot afford health care. Since opening in 1993, the clinic has had difficulty serving the needs of all community members who rely on its services.
In 2007, the Fauquier Free Clinic partnered with Sterling to determine how it could serve more people who signed up for its services. Sterling conducted a deep analysis of the clinic’s operations, identifying several bottlenecks that could be eliminated through the hiring of one full time worker focused exclusively on case management. Sterling also found ways to expand the clinic’s pharmacy without increasing costs—one of the major expenses of any free clinic. The clinic has become one of the crown jewels in Fauquier County, a place where families who previously had no access to medical insurance can now address their medical needs. Sterling Helps Address America’s Obesity Problem
One of Sterling's clients was a highly successful entrepreneur and co-founder of a Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University. Over the past decade, the Center has achieved considerable success improving America’s diet, preventing obesity, and reducing the stigma associated with overweight individuals. Back in 2005, however, the organization was little more than an idea—the client was struggling to identify how to make his charitable vision a reality.
Recognizing Sterling’s expertise in the charitable consulting space, the client engaged us to help him achieve his vision. Sterling immediately set about gathering the country’s leading experts on obesity to determine where to start. Through these discussions, Sterling identified Professor Kelly Brownell of Yale University as the key person to lead the effort.
Shortly thereafter, Brownell and the client founded the Center together. Since then, the organization has been at the forefront of the obesity debate in America, informing issues such as a ban on sweetened-cereal ads targeting children, the inclusion of calorie information on restaurant menus, and taxes on foods that are high in fat and low in nutritional value. As a result, Brownell was named one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in 2006. Without Sterling’s guidance and expertise, however, Brownell and the client claim that the Center’s impact never would have been possible. Watch the video above to learn more.
