Private Foundations Play a Critical Role in Keeping Society Healthy
Private foundations are the essential vehicles through which the most productive and most fortunate members of our society reinvest in civilization. The range of commitments is vast - from housing the homeless to preserving ancient treasures; from feeding the hungry to curing disease; from reaching out to those in the greatest despair to sustaining those who seek spiritual enlightenment. These, and everything in between, are the domain of philanthropy. And private foundations are the engine that makes possible much of the sustained, long-term philanthropy that helps so many.
Without our philanthropic institutions - our universities, libraries, museums, and hospitals; our churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples; our think tanks, operas, ballets, and orchestras; our disaster relief agencies, private welfare organizations, animal protection leagues, and violence prevention agencies; our environmental protection organizations, scientific research laboratories, disabled assistance societies, and thousands of other important organizations - we would all be infinitely poorer.
