What Can My Foundation Do?
Some donors start a private foundation knowing exactly what they want to do with their money. They see some aspect of the human condition that is so appalling they must try to remedy it, or some cause so noble they must support it. But most donors begin with much less specific plans.
This section is designed to give you some idea of the immense variety of good work done by charitable organizations. It does not pretend to be, nor could it be, an exhaustive list of options. Merely listing the charities eligible to receive donations from private foundations - even without describing them - would produce a book too heavy for most people to lift, in type too tiny for most of us to read.
Instead, we have described some existing charitable endeavors, in the hope of stimulating thoughts about what you could do with your donations. Would you like to bolster your religion, fund scholarships, save whales, feed the poor, or support medical research? You can. Would you like to support a well-established charity, or perhaps create a new one? You can. Would you like to see your name on a building, or be an anonymous benefactor? You can. The possibilities are endless.
